Overview
World-renowned Parkland Hospital is the county hospital for Dallas County, TX and the largest teaching hospital in the country. A Level 1 Trauma Center, Parkland is a medical and surgical referral center for Dallas/Fort Worth, North Texas and Southern Oklahoma. The hospital also averages 15-16,000 babies delivered per year.
The tremendous number of patients seen at Parkland led the Dallas County Commissioners Court to make plans to replace the facility with a new 2,500,000-square-foot, 862-bed facility. Included in the plans are a new 380,000-square-foot outpatient center, a 275,000-square-foot office facility and parking for 6,000 cars.
When completed, Parkland will be the largest greenfield construction project for a hospital in the world.
Project:
Texas AirSystems was selected as the Basis of Design by the architects and engineers, HDR, Inc. After completing the functional requirements, the HVAC equipment was put out for bid through a traditional plan and spec process. The result of the competitive bidding was the selection of industry leading Temtrol as the manufacturer to provide the equipment, complete with FANWALL™ technology for the building’s HVAC system.
Technical Solution:
The Temtrol system components include air handling units and the industry leading FANWALL™ technology. Rather than one large fan, the air handling units are composed of a wall of smaller fans that boasts a number of advantages including planned redundancy, low maintenance costs, improved acoustics and smaller units without as many moving parts (no fan belts, fan shafts or need for regular bearing lubrication).
Texas AirSystems is utilizing Temtrol and FANWALL™ advantages to meet the vision of the HDR architects and engineers.
Summary:
Parkland Health & Hospital System represents a historical landmark and a vital piece of the infrastructure to the North Texas community. The public entity faces a high level of scrutiny to deliver a project on time while remaining cost-conscious.
Working as a team, the public entity, architects, engineers and contractors are delivering a project that meets the efficiencies needed for long-term value to the DFW Metroplex.
